A volcano that has been dormant for 6 thousand years has awakened in Iceland

There is no danger for the cities and the international airport; the air harbor continues to operate.

In Iceland, the Fagradalsfjall volcano eruption began, which had been dormant for six thousand years. As the Icelandic Meteorological Office reported on Twitter, the eruption on the Reykjavik peninsula was the first in 781 years.

Torrents of hot lava poured down the fire-breathing mountain slopes, located 30 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik and near the international airport. The night sky was lit up with red-orange flashes.

The air harbor was not closed, but the red danger code is valid for aircraft; the decision to cancel flights is made by airlines. The volcano also poses no danger to cities since it is located at a considerable distance from residential buildings. However, Civil Protection advised residents not to open their windows due to the spread of volcanic gases.
