The candidate of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Franziska Giffey, will become the first woman to hold the post of mayor of Berlin, according to preliminary election data, according to which the SPD won in the German capital.

Giffey was nominated by the Berlin branch of the SPD as the leader of the electoral list for the elections to the Berlin House of Representatives and as a candidate for mayor. Currently, the position of mayor in the German capital is occupied by another well-known Social Democrat, Michael Muller. Franziska Giffey served as the Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth of Germany, but submitted her resignation in connection with the scandal surrounding her academic degree, obtained earlier at the Free University (FU) of Berlin.
