Life on our planet cannot be called easy, because every time nature presents us with unpleasant surprises. Right now, the whole world is watching with fear the spread of the 2019-nCoV coronavirus, and people in eastern Africa are worried about a large locust infestation. These insects, which devour all the plants found in their path, have multiplied so much that at the moment the size of their swarm over Ethiopia is compared with the area of Moscow. Hundreds of them crash into cars traveling on roads and interfere with the flight of aircraft. However, their main danger is that they can destroy field crops and leave Africans without food. The authorities urgently need to destroy these insects, but how can this be done?
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, an invasion of locusts can cause hunger in many regions of Africa. In Ethiopia and Somalia, such large insect invasions have not happened for more than 25 years, and at the moment almost all the forces of these countries are concentrated on solving this particular problem. It is believed that initially hordes of locusts formed in Arab Yemen, and then flew across the Red Sea. In 2019, there were many torrential rains in Africa, which contributed to the birth of even more insects.
What is the danger of locust invasion?
According to scientists, in 2020 the problems caused by hordes of locusts can become catastrophic. At the moment, it is known that insects actively breed in Iran, Pakistan and India. A few months later, huge swarms of locusts can also form over these countries and spread to other regions of our planet. This does not need a lot of time, because the locust is able to overcome up to 150 kilometers per day.
A UN report says that a locust cloud the size of Paris can absorb as much food in one day as half the city’s population consumes in one day. Some farmers from Ethiopia have already completely lost their crops, but also do not forget that locusts also deprive animals of food. That is why UN representatives recognized the seriousness of the situation and decided to call on all countries of the world to help the African people.
“Residents of Africa have already experienced problems with growing food and making money for living due to the drought that came after the rains. When the hordes of locusts disappear, we must help them to their feet”, UN officials said.
At the moment, the only way to get rid of locusts is by spraying toxic substances with airplanes. Only now, because of the huge flocks of insects with the control of aircraft, there are also great difficulties. For example, in December 2019, pilots of one of the aircraft were forced to make an emergency landing in Addis Ababa due to the fact that thousands of insects began to crash into the windshield and block the view.
It is hoped that the authorities will have enough money and energy to destroy harmful insects. To support Africa, the United Nations Humanitarian Director allocated $10 million to purchase and spray pesticides against locusts. Perhaps the funds for these purposes will be shared by representatives of various countries.
