An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to seismologists, the epicenter of the tremors was located more than 2.4 thousand kilometers from the settlement of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas on the British archipelago of Tristan da Cunha; its focus lay at a depth of 78 kilometers.

In connection with the earthquake, seismologists are studying the possibility of a tsunami in the Caribbean region. The warning has not yet been announced.
