Symptoms of coronavirus in cats and minks are fever, coughing, sneezing, outflows from the nasal cavity, and eyes, in dogs the disease was asymptomatic. This was reported in the press service of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
“Cats (domestic and wild), as well as minks, predominantly showed clinical signs of acute respiratory infection. In particular, the animal recorded fever, coughing, sneezing, the outflow from the nasal cavity, and eyes. Some animals showed signs of acute intestinal infection, accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. In dogs, the disease was asymptomatic, ”the report said.
The reason for contacting the veterinarian is any change in the clinical condition of the animal. However, at the moment there is no need for mass studies of animals on COVID-19.
“The basis for research may be primarily the close contact of the animal with a person infected with COVID-19. Also, testing is recommended for animals showing clinical signs of a respiratory disease caused by COVID-19, ”the scientists explained.
The decision to test animals is made by representatives of the state veterinary service of the region or the owner of the animal after consultation with the veterinarian.
“In the case of detection of animals that respond positively to COVID-19, the main measure is its isolation at the place of keeping and preventing contact with other people and animals. Antiviral and symptomatic treatment is prescribed for a sick animal until recovery, ”the department emphasized.
