The Council of Ministers of Cyprus has decided to revoke citizenship of a number of Russian entrepreneurs close to Vladimir Putin.

The Government of Cyprus has decided to deprive four more Russians on the EU sanctions list of their Cypriot passports. The decision was announced on Wednesday. Thus, eight people associated with the Kremlin have already lost their Cypriot citizenship this month.

The passports of their family members will also be canceled, Deputy official representative of the Cypriot government Niovi Parisinou said in a written statement.

The names of these individuals are not disclosed.

Recall that on April 7, the Council of Ministers of Cyprus decided to revoke the citizenship of four other Russians from the list of persons against whom the European Union imposed sanctions in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and who are considered close to Vladimir Putin.

In total, more than a thousand Russians have been sanctioned by the European Union.

Earlier, Cyprus, a member of the European Union, granted citizenship to 2,886 Russian citizens, among whom were investors and their family members who received citizenship under the “golden passports” program in the period from 2007 to August 2020.

A total of 6,779 people received citizenship for investments of at least 2 million euros ($2.17 million). The program has been in operation for more than a decade and was closed in November 2020 after numerous violations were found during its implementation.
