Anthony Fauci: “US regulators can fully approve COVID vaccines as early as August”

Anthony Fauci, a leading American expert on infectious diseases, said that regulatory authorities could fully approve vaccines against COVID-19 as early as next month.

According to Fauci, full approval of vaccines may encourage unvaccinated Americans to get vaccinated.

Currently, the two-component Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines and the one-component Johnson&Johnson vaccine are used in accordance with the emergency use permit issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The infectious disease specialist said that as soon as the full approval of the FDA is received, people with a weakened immune system will be able to receive a third dose of the vaccine.

The FDA said on Friday that it is currently considering the Pfizer/BioNTech application as a priority. Also, a request to the FDA for approval of the vaccine was sent by the Moderna pharmaceutical company.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 163 million people in the United States, or almost half of the population, have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

At the same time, vaccination rates remain at a persistently low level in some parts of the country, where people do not dare to get vaccinated.

The CDC also reports an increase in the number of cases of COVID in almost 90% of US administrative jurisdictions. In total, more than 611,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the United States.
