Turkish police have detained suspects in the arson of forests in the city of Manavgat. The Anadolu agency reports this with reference to the words of the country’s Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu.
Law enforcement agencies say that one of the alleged perpetrators was noticed by residents while lighting a fire. “The citizens demanded to hand over the suspect for lynching,” the Foreign Minister said. After such demands, Cavusoglu had to go to the scene of the events.
Residents accused the authorities of protecting the criminal. The Turkish Foreign Minister assured them that the perpetrators would not escape responsibility. He added that everyone has doubts about the causes of the fires since they started all over Turkey at the same time.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that intelligence was involved in the investigation.
According to the latest data, more than 180 people were injured due to the fires; three were killed.
