At least 80 people were killed in the west of Germany due to torrential rains and severe floods, and more than a thousand people were missing, according to local authorities.
Andreas Friedrich, a representative of the German Meteorological Service, said in an interview with CNN: “In some areas, we have not seen such an amount of precipitation for 100 years”
According to the Deutsche Welle TV Company, most people died in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rheinland-Pfalz, and 1,300 people were missing in the Ahrweiler region, where the Ahr River flowing into the Rhine overflowed its banks.
Rescue operations are complicated by the fact that telephone and Internet connections are not working in some areas.
The authorities report that the flooding also disrupted the operation of the railway and navigation on the Rhine River.
