According to Chinese sources, Chinese startup Biren Technology will unveil a digital 7nm GPU project during the third quarter of this year that will compete with NVIDIA’s upcoming 5nm GPU. This will not be the first graphics solution from China in the last two years, which gives hope to stir up the NVIDIA / AMD duopoly. But not everything is so simple.
As the developers explain, they are not going to compete with graphics processors NVIDIA or AMD in their main field of activity – in the field of graphics processing. Instead, Biren Technology focuses on GPGPU computing, and from a modern point of view, it is AI computing both in the field of learning and from the standpoint of decision making. It is in this area that future Chinese 7nm products are ready to challenge NVIDIA.
The first chip from Biren Technology has come to the stage of completing a digital project, which means that it will soon be ready for production. At the next stage, the photomasks will be made and sent to the manufacturer, obviously TSMC. The production of the 7nm Chinese “GPU” will begin next year. In parallel with these efforts, engineers at Biren Technology began to design the next generation of processors.
Biren Technology was established in September 2019. It is said to have set a record for Chinese companies in the first round of fundraising. This promotion earned Biren Technology ¥1.1 billion ($170 million) in 2020. In March of this year, after the second round of fundraising, the company’s total funding reached ¥4.7 billion.
