EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that Russia’s withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty (OST) will negatively affect the global architecture of arms control.

“Russia’s announcement to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty is regrettable and will have a detrimental impact on the global arms control architecture,” the agency quoted the head of European diplomacy as saying.

The European Union will study the consequences of Russia’s decision, the document says.

“By providing transparency and predictability, the Open Skies Treaty contributes to vital confidence-building. The return of all to their obligations under the Treaty will strengthen European and global security and stability,” said Josep Borrel.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier on Friday that Russia will officially leave the OST on December 18, 2021. The Russian Foreign Ministry blamed the United States for the collapse of the Treaty.
