The EU may stop financial assistance to Sudan due to a military coup, the union’s high representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said in a statement in response to the actions of the Sudanese military led by the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the de facto leader of the country, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

“The EU strongly condemns the military coup in Sudan and the detention of the Prime Minister and several ministers … the EU also condemns al-Burhan’s statement on the imposition of a state of emergency and the suspension of key provisions of the constitution and the dissolution of governing structures. If the situation does not change in the near future, there will be serious consequences in cooperation with the EU, including regarding financial support,” the statement says.
