Brazilian health regulator Anvisa has issued a permit for using a coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, reports Agence France-Presse, citing representatives of the organization.
“It gives me great pleasure to report that after a review that took 17 days, (the regulatory authorities) issued the first approval for the widespread use of the COVID-19 vaccine,”said Anvisa director Antonio Barra Torres.
He added that the permit implies using the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, not only in emergency cases.
It is noted that at present, the Brazilian authorities have not yet received an approved vaccine.
In Brazil, COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by the British AstraZeneca and the Chinese Sinovac are now approved for emergency use. Also, the Anvisa agency has exempted the need for registration of vaccines supplied through the international COVAX mechanism.
