According to a ministry statement posted on Twitter, the Foreign Ministry and the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, together with the Ministry of Health, are negotiating with the US administration about the possible purchase of the vaccine.
The White House on Friday announced plans to transfer 4 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has already been produced in the United States, to Canada and Mexico. According to the administration official, the White House does not plan to transfer this batch of the vaccine to other countries.
Brazil is facing the world’s second-worst coronavirus outbreak after the United States. The situation has worsened due to a new wave of infections, which has put the country’s health system on the verge of collapse. On Friday, the Brazilian Health Ministry said that in the last 24 hours, the record of coronavirus infections per day was broken – more than 90 thousand new cases, as well as a sad record for deaths – the second-highest since the beginning of the pandemic.
The Federal Government has been slow to implement vaccinations, with local governments suspending vaccinations in various regions due to drug shortages.
