American composer, poet, and playwright, author of many Broadway musicals Stephen Sondheim died at his home in Roxbury (Connecticut). This was reported by The New York Times with reference to his lawyer.

According to the publication, Sondheim died suddenly the morning after the Thanksgiving celebration. The composer was 91 years old.

Sondheim remains one of the most revered theater composers and songwriters of the second half of the twentieth century. He has received a record number of Tony Awards – eight.

Sondheim received his first award in 1962 for the comedy musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” Among his works are also the musicals “Sweeney Todd” in 1979 and “Into the Woods” in 1987.
