Elizabeth II congratulated Raducanu on her victory at the US Open Tennis Championship

The victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athlete, the Queen of Great Britain noted.

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain congratulated the British tennis player Emma Raducanu, who became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles tournament since 1977. This is stated in the personal message of the monarch published by Buckingham Palace to the 18-year-old athlete.

“I send you my congratulations on your success at the US Open, which you won. This is an outstanding achievement at such a young age, and it is a testament to your hard work and dedication. I do not doubt that your outstanding performance, as well as that of your opponent [in the final] Leylah Fernandez, will inspire the next generation of tennis players,” the message reads.
Raducanu receives congratulations from all over the UK. Her achievement was noted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and heir to the throne Prince Charles, the leader of the opposition Labour pariah Keir Starmer, government ministers, and heads of regions, athletes, and musicians.

The first British woman since 1977

Raducanu is ranked 150th in the ranking of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). On her account, there were no victories in tournaments under the auspices of the WTA. She competed at the US Open for the first time. Her first Grand Slam tournament was Wimbledon 2021, where she reached the fourth round.

Raducanu became the first tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament, making it to the main draw through qualification. She also became the first representative of Great Britain in 44 years to win a Grand Slam tournament (in 1977, Virginia Wade won the Wimbledon tournament). During the US Open, Raducanu did not lose a single set.

Only two months ago, Raducanu, who lives in South London, passed her final school exams. Until recently, she was going to study law at university; however, according to British media, the rise of her sports career may mean that the girl will postpone these plans for the future. Raducanu was born in Canada to immigrants from China and Romania and moved to the UK with her parents at the age of two.

The US Open is the final, fourth Grand Slam tournament of the season; it takes place on the hard surface in New York. The total prize fund of the 141st drawing is a record $57.5 million. The winner of the last tournament was the Japanese Naomi Osaka.
