The Instagram Kids app will allow children under 13 to use the platform safely.

Facebook plans to launch the Instagram Kids app – a version of the social network of the same name specifically for children under the age of 13. This was reported on Thursday by the portal BuzzFeed, citing internal documents of the company.

Instagram Vice President Vishal Shah said:” We will be introducing a new youth component to the community product group to focus on two things: accelerating our work on integrity and privacy to ensure the safest possible experience for teens, and creating a version of Instagram that will allow people under the age of 13 to use the platform for the first time safely.”

The email was sent out two days after Instagram management said more efforts should be made to protect young users. Following the coverage and public criticism of the abuse and bullying faced by teenagers on the app, the social network’s official blog posted a message on Tuesday titled “Continuing to make Instagram safer for the youngest members of our community.”

At the moment, the company’s policy prohibits the use of the service by persons under 13.
