Facebook will launch a competitor to TikTok, the Reels service. It will work inside Instagram, while first becoming available in countries where the authorities want to ban TikTok.

Facebook has said it will launch its short video sharing platform. Reels service will appear in the USA and 50 other countries. This will happen just a week after the company began testing its platform in India. Reels appeared thereafter the authorities of this country banned TikTok, and a few days later the administration of US President Donald Trump announced the same plans.

Reels will allow people to record and edit 15-second videos, which can be overlaid with music and other videos. However, the official launch date is still unknown.

“We always look at what users want, we always want to innovate that will improve the experience of people on our platforms. Other social networks are pretty big competitors, but we are confident that Instagram is unique and meets the needs of our community”.

That being said, Instagram isn’t the only company looking to compete with TikTok. YouTube is developing a rival to this social network – Shorts, which is due out before the end of the year. However, none of these companies have yet to make public official comments on the launch.

“It’s nice to see other companies appreciate the new creative experience TikTok is doing,” the company spokesman said in an interview with CNN. “We have always believed that open competition brings enormous benefits to users”.
