He was 98 years old.
World War II veteran, former Republican U.S. Senator, and 1996 presidential candidate Bob Dole (Robert Joseph Dole) has died at the age of 98.
“It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep,” the charitable foundation founded by the politician’s wife Elizabeth Dole said in a message posted on Twitter on Sunday. The causes of death are not reported in the publication.
Dole represented the state of Kansas in the U.S. Senate for 27 years – from 1969 to 1996, and before that he was a member of the House of Representatives for eight years. In the 1996 presidential election, he was the Republican candidate but lost to Democrat Bill Clinton, who was re-elected for a second term.
According to Reuters, in February of this year, Dole announced that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
