Gates and Buffett companies to build fast neutron reactor in Wyoming

The future reactor, which will cost about $1 billion to build, will be able to generate up to 500 MW of electricity at the peak of demand, according to TerraPower.

The energy companies of Microsoft founder Bill Gates and the head of the Berkshire Hathaway investment fund Warren Buffett will build a new type of nuclear reactor in Wyoming – on fast neutrons with a sodium coolant. The presentation of the project, as reported on Thursday by the British newspaper The Guardian, took place at a press conference organized on Wednesday in the city of Cheyenne (Wyoming).

“We think that [technology] Natrium (the creation of fast neutron reactors) will radically change the rules of the game in the energy industry,” the publication quotes Gates, who addressed the participants of the press conference via video link.

“This is our fastest and most environmentally-friendly course to achieve [the state’s] negative carbon emissions,” the newspaper quoted Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon as saying. “Nuclear power is undoubtedly part of my comprehensive strategy for [the state’s] energy supply.” At a press conference, it was stated that the exact location of the demonstration plant of the new reactor is expected to be announced by the end of the year. Gates’ TerraPower and Buffett’s PacifiCorp will participate in the project. The future reactor, which will cost about $1 billion to build, will be able to generate up to 500 MW of electricity at the peak of demand, according to TerraPower. According to the CEO of this company, Chris Leveque, it will take seven years to build a demonstration reactor installation.
