The candidate for chancellor of Germany from the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, Armin Laschet, threatened Russia with sanctions if the “Nord stream-2” gas pipeline is used against Ukraine. Laschet made the corresponding statement in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita; extracts from the conversation are quoted by the publication Die Welt.
“If Russia retakes aggressive actions against Ukraine, Germany will take measures at the national level and will advocate punitive measures within the European Union,” the candidate for chancellor said.
According to him, this way, the FRG will “prevent” the use of the “Nord stream-2” as a “geopolitical weapon.” Says Laschet, the agreement on the pipeline between the US and Germany provides a tool by which they can “work together to bring Russia to justice for destructive activities.”
At the same time, he added that the sovereignty and security of Ukraine “should be a priority of Germany’s foreign policy.”
