Google was ordered to pay a fine of $ 170 million for illegally collecting data about young children. This was reported on the website of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The New York City attorney’s office and the FTC proved that YouTube video hosting collected personal data of viewers who had not yet reached the age of 13. The administration of the service did not request the permission of the guardians and parents for this.
The actions of Google-owned YouTube violated Federal children’s online privacy protection law. The results of the checks revealed that the data was collected through cookies, and later used to target advertising offers.
The fine, issued to Google, was the largest in the history of enforcement of the law on the protection of children’s data on the Internet. The FTC website reports that the Commission will receive $ 136 million, and the remaining amount will be transferred to the Prosecutor’s office.
Earlier, the Commission has collected a record fine from Facebook. The FTC estimated the damage from user leaks at $ 5 billion.
