Huawei has expanded its sales and business development opportunities in Moscow since the beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine, their sales in Russia increased by 300 % in the first half of March.
The Chinese company Huawei may be subject to new sanctions from the United States for expanding cooperation with Russia. This was reported on Thursday by the Financial Times newspaper.
According to the publication, Huawei’s four Russian research centers hire dozens of engineers, including machine learning specialists in Novosibirsk, speech recognition researchers in St. Petersburg and data analysts in Nizhny Novgorod. Huawei has also expanded its sales and business development opportunities in Moscow since the start of a special military operation in Ukraine.
Despite the initial decline in the supply of smartphones of the Chinese company to Russia this year, their sales in Russia for the first half of March increased by 300%. At the same time, according to experts, Huawei, as well as competitor Xiaomi, risk violating Western sanctions against the Russian Federation if the supply of phones and telecommunications equipment to Russia continues. Chinese electronics often contain semiconductors made with the help of American equipment, and its manufacturers must obtain Washington’s approval for their export.
According to Kevin Wolf, a former employee of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Huawei and other Chinese manufacturers “cannot legally export products to Russia.”
“It is theoretically possible that [Huawei],” he believes, “will try to make elements or a base station without American tools, software.”
“However, it is hard to believe that they will be able to find all [semiconductors] that were not produced on American equipment,” the expert added.
As Huawei Chairman of the Board of Directors Guo Ping said on Monday, the company is concerned about the conflict in Ukraine and is monitoring developments, including in the light of anti-Russian sanctions. Huawei drew attention to the measures that have been taken against Russia by a number of countries and regions of the world. At the same time, as Guo Ping said, such measures are very complex and constantly changing, and the company is studying the current situation.
