As a result of the shooting at a church located in the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama, three people were injured. Two of them were fatal. According to the police, the suspect was detained.

The shooting occurred on Thursday evening, June 16, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, police Captain Shane Ware said at a press conference. “The suspect came to a meeting of a small group of parishioners and opened fire,” he said.

The town of Vestavia Hills with a population of about 40 thousand people is located about 11 kilometers southeast of Birmingham.

Ware said that the suspect, whose identity has not been established, was taken into custody. The police did not comment on the possible motives of the criminal.

“This is a tragedy for our entire city, not just for the church,” the Reverend Kelley Hudlow said in an interview with local television. According to her, none of the church employees were injured as a result of the shooting.
