BERLIN – The American bomb of the Second World War was discovered during construction works in the center of Berlin, informs the city police on Twitter.
A 100-kilogram shell was found on Friday evening, June 14, near Alexanderplatz in the Mitte area.
According to the TV and radio company RBB, the surrounding area was cordoned off within a radius of 300 meters, which, among other buildings, was a nursing home. In addition, traffic was suspended.
In total law enforcement authorities for the period of works on neutralization evacuated about three thousand people living in close proximity to the place of detection of a bomb.
About 01.45 local times the projectile was neutralized.
At the end of World War II, at least two million bombs were dropped on Germany. It is assumed that one in five of it did not break.
