In India, the third type of mold was detected in a patient after COVID-19

Indian doctors for the first time found a third type of fungal mold in a person – a doctor from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh reported finding three types of mold – yellow, black, and white – in one of the patients.

As Dr. Tyagi noted, the patient was treated for COVID-19 for two months and began to recover, but four days ago, one side of the patient’s face began to swell, which made it impossible for him to open his eyes. There was also a nosebleed and blood was found in the urine. The patient was hospitalized, where a medical examination revealed an infection with a fungal infection.

As previously noted by doctors, fungal diseases can develop in those who are in contact with spores in the environment, or after the fungus penetrates the skin through a cut, scratch, or burn. The greatest danger of the disease is for people with diabetes, as well as those whose immunity is reduced after fighting the disease, in particular with the coronavirus.

Earlier, the Indian authorities reported the discovery in the country of more than 8.8 thousand cases of mucormycosis, or “black mold” – the so-called complication caused by a fungal infection. Several cases of aspergillosis, or “white mold,” have also been reported. Several patients have been infected with fungi of both types, but yellow mold in humans occurs for the first time.

“The 45-year-old patient’s sinuses were normal on a CT scan, but after performing an endoscopy, we learned that he had contracted 3 types of fungi (black, white, and yellow). The yellow fungus is commonly found in reptiles. I first discovered this in a person,” otolaryngologist B. P. Tyagi told NDTV. According to Dr. Tyagi, the symptoms of Mucor septicus (yellow fungus) are lethargy, decreased or loss of appetite, and weight loss. Over time, there is suppuration, slow healing of wounds, and tissue necrosis.
