Japanese athletes, as well as coaches and staff who will take part in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, began to receive the first doses of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, the agency Kyodo writes.
On the first day, a total of 200 participants of the upcoming competitions were vaccinated.
It is expected that until July 20, about 600 athletes and a thousand people from among the coaches and staff will receive vaccinations.
“I believe that vaccination is a step towards reducing the risk of infection not only among the athletes themselves but also among the Japanese society,” the portal quotes the head of the Japanese delegation, Tsuyoshi Fukui.
The Olympic Games in Tokyo were supposed to be held last year, but the competition was postponed due to the situation with the spread of the pandemic of new coronavirus infection. This year, the Olympiad will be held from July 23 to August 8.
