The authorities of the city of Miami Beach (Florida) have declared a state of emergency. They are introducing some restrictive measures due to the large influx of people, mostly students, who arrived here for spring break. This was reported on Saturday by the Fox News channel.
“Too many people are coming here at the moment,” the channel quoted Mayor Dan Gelber as saying. He compared the situation in the city to a fuse that, if not taken immediately, could catch fire.
In accordance with the new restrictions, a curfew will be imposed in the city from 8 pm local time. From 9 pm to 6 am, the entry will be closed on the three main highways that connect Miami Beach with Miami.
According to the TV channel, these measures aim to suppress mass celebrations, during which the rules of social distance introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic are not observed, and violations of public order often accompany the festivities. Police in the city, which has a population of about 100,000, has already made more than 900 arrests in February and March and are forced to request Miami reinforcements to maintain order.
