In the capital of Georgia, the fifth debate of the candidates for President of the United States passed.

On Wednesday evening, Atlanta hosts another, already the fifth debate of Democrats seeking to participate in the presidential election in 2020. On the eve of the debate, Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was the center of attention. In the past few weeks, Buttigieg has unexpectedly topped some of the sentiment ratings among Democrats compiled by opinion polls.

In addition to Buttigieg, former Vice President Joe Biden, senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, and Cory Booker, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, businessman Andrew Yang and billionaire Tom Steyer are also taking part in debate, which was hosted by MSNBC and the Washington Post.

The debates going on for 11 weeks until the first pre-election party conference (Caucus) in the state of Iowa. They will be held on February 3.

Participants in the debate mentioned two possible participants in the election race, who are not present on the stage today – former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, who announced the start of the campaign last week, and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, who decided to also claim the nomination, explaining this with his fears that none of the candidates are able to defeat Donald Trump.

Until recently, three politicians-Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders led the ratings. However, 37-year-old Buttigieg unexpectedly topped the voter preference ratings in Iowa in the last two polls. However, African-American voters do not yet support Buttigieg. Quinnipiac University on Monday released the results of a poll conducted in South Carolina, where African Americans make up about 60% of the democratic electorate. According to this poll, the former mayor of South Bend is not popular among black voters.

Buttigieg did not have a relationship with African Americans living in South bend. In 2012, he fired the city’s first black police chief, and earlier this year there were protests in the city after a police officer shot and killed an African-American.
