In the UK, Meta was sued for £2.3 billion

The lawsuit states that the company provides free access to its social network and transfers users’ personal data to advertisers for this.

The American company Meta in the UK has received a class action for £2.3 billion due to accusations against its Facebook platform about the use of users’ personal data. This was reported on Friday by The Guardian newspaper.

“It [Meta] exploits [her] users by taking their personal data and not paying them proper compensation for it,” the publication quotes the words of legal expert Dr. Lisa Lovdal Gormsen, who filed a lawsuit against the company. “I don’t think users fully realize how unfair this agreement [with the company] is when they accept [its] terms.”

The petition claims that Meta violated the British Competition Law of 1998. The lawsuit states that the company provides free access to its social network and transfers users’ personal data to advertisers for this, receiving most of its income at this expense.

“People get access to our social network for free. They themselves control what information they share on Meta platforms and with whom,” a Meta representative commented on the submitted application.

The newspaper clarifies that the claim covers the period from October 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019. If the case is successful, the amount of compensation per user will be set by the court. The amount of £2.3 billion was determined as an estimate of the damage caused to users. According to The Guardian, the case may take up to a year to be considered.
