The UK authorities have registered the first case of death of a person who became infected with the Omicron strain of coronavirus. This was announced on Monday by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson.
“Unfortunately, we are seeing cases of hospitalization as a result of infection with the Omicron strain. At least one patient infected with the Omicron strain has died,” the head of government said, speaking to reporters after visiting a vaccination center in west London.
In connection with the detection of the first fatal outcome after infection with the Omicron strain, the prime minister urged residents of the country not to postpone vaccination with a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine. “I think we need to put aside the assumption that Omicron is a milder version of the coronavirus. It must be admitted that it is spreading at a high rate among the population. The best thing we can do in such a situation is to get a booster dose,” he said.
According to the prime minister, the Omicron strain accounts for 40% of all new cases of coronavirus infection in London. “By tomorrow, most [new] cases will be associated with this strain,” he added.
