The unduly secretive behavior of two soldiers from an elite unit of the Bundeswehr, who were on exercises in Arizona, USA, almost provoked a diplomatic conflict, reports the publication, Der Spiegel.

Two soldiers who took part in the maneuvers visited a local hospital to determine whether doctors will be able to help German soldiers in case of emergencies or coronavirus infection.

However, due to the fact that the visitors of the clinic did not present identification documents at the request of the medical staff, they were mistaken for terrorists engaged in preparing an attack on the hospital. The hospital staff immediately notified the FBI of suspicious visitors.

The FBI contacted the German embassy in Washington, but they, due to the high secrecy, did not know about the exercises of the German Special Forces in Arizona. It was only after numerous phone calls to Berlin that the situation was clarified.
