Britain is deeply shocked by the murder of parliamentarian David Amess, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.

“I think each of us is deeply shocked by what happened. Our thoughts are with his family, wife, and children,” he said on Sky News.

The Prime Minister stressed that Amess had served for more than 40 years to benefit the people of Essex and the whole of Great Britain and was one of the kindest people in politics.

Earlier on Friday, Sky News reported that Amess, who represented Southend West (Essex), was attacked on Friday at the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea: a man entered the reception area of the constituency and stabbed the MP several times.

Essex County Police subsequently reported that a man had died after a knife attack in Leigh-on-Sea and confirmed that the attack victim was Parliamentarian Amess. A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, who is currently in custody, and a knife was also found, which was allegedly the murder weapon.
