Merkel spoke out against US sanctions to the “Nord stream-2”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the “Nord stream-2” gas pipeline should be completed, and the US sanctions on the project do not correspond to Germany’s legal views.

“We believe that this project needs to be completed, and we will work in this way,” Merkel said.

She added that “Nord stream-2” is an industrial project that “has a political component.”

“Nord stream-2” involves the construction of two strands of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast along the bottom of the Baltic Sea to Germany.

The project is actively opposed by the United States, which promotes its liquefied natural gas in the EU, as well as Ukraine and several European countries. At the end of 2019, the United States imposed sanctions on the project, requiring the pipe companies to stop construction immediately. Swiss Allseas almost immediately announced the suspension of its activities.
