The “Nord stream-2” gas pipeline is necessary for Germany; the right of Berlin to independently solve energy supply issues was recognized by US President Joe Biden, the candidate for chancellor of Germany from the conservative bloc Armin Laschet said at a podium discussion organized by the Stuttgart Zeitung newspaper.
The politician stressed that he considers the project to be economic and right for Germany, since the country is facing a transition period during the creation of green energy. At the same time, he recalled that Berlin agreed to build terminals for receiving liquefied natural gas, through which American liquefied gas can be imported.
Speaking about the US position, Laschet pointed to Biden’s decision not to impose sanctions against the operator of the “Nord stream-2” gas pipeline. “The current president (USA) has recognized that this is Germany’s decision and that the sanctions are being lifted. This, perhaps, will lead to a good result during the visit of the Federal Chancellor (Angela Merkel to the United States),” the politician added.
Earlier, Laschet said that when launching the “Nord stream-2” and issuing a permit from the EU, it is necessary to set a condition that the gas pipeline cannot be used for geopolitical purposes. He called the project economic, adding that it should not “dehydrate” Ukraine.
