Durst, who became famous because of his scandalous participation in a documentary series about his life, was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Susan Berman.

A member of one of the richest American families owning a real estate business, multimillionaire Robert Durst was sentenced by a judge in Los Angeles on Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his best friend.

Durst, who became famous in the United States and other countries thanks to his participation in the documentary series The Jinx, filmed by HBO, has consistently denied accusations that in 2000 he shot his girlfriend Susan Berman at her home in Beverly Hills to prevent her from testifying to the police in the case of the disappearance of Durst’s wife two decades earlier.

However, in September, a jury in Los Angeles took just eight hours to find the 78-year-old guilty of the cold-blooded murder of Berman.

“This crime was the murder of a witness,” Judge Mark Windham said before announcing Durst’s sentence – life imprisonment – This circumstance… it has greatly aggravated the gravity of this terrible, terrible crime.”

Windham rejected the defense’s request for a new trial, stating that there was “factual and irrefutable evidence of Burst’s guilt.”

During the trial, testimony was given by Sareb Kaufman, the son of Susan Berman, who said that his life would have been completely different if Durst had not killed his mother.

During the court session at which he was sentenced, Durst sat motionless in a wheelchair.

The prosecutor’s office claims that he killed Berman to prevent her from being questioned by investigators from the New York police department dealing with the case of the disappearance of his wife Kathleen in 1982.

Berman, the millionaire’s best friend, served as Durst’s press secretary and official representative in the early 1980s after he became a suspect in the case of his wife’s disappearance.

The prosecutor’s office has not charged her husband Robert, a member of one of the richest and most influential New York families, in the case of the disappearance of Kathleen Durst.

Durst was arrested in March 2015 in New Orleans on suspicion of the murder of Berman a few hours before the airing of the last episode of the documentary series The Jinx, the main character of which Robert himself agreed to become, thus deciding to refute the charges against him.

At the end of the last episode, the creators of the series showed a shocking recording: Durst can be heard muttering to himself: “So you got caught… Of course I killed them all,” apparently unaware that the microphone he was wearing on his clothes during the filming of the last episode remained on while Durst used the toilet during the break.

During Thursday’s hearing, Susan Berman’s relatives tried to convince Durst to tell them where he hid his wife’s body.

At the beginning of the documentary series, the authors told the story of the death of Durst’s neighbor in Texas. The body of Morris Black, who lived in an apartment next to Durst, was found dismembered in the bay of the Texas coastal town of Galveston.

Durst confessed to dismembering the corpse, stating that Black’s murder was self-defense. In 2004, a jury acquitted Durst of the murder of his neighbor.

Durst has repeatedly denied any involvement in Berman’s death, but he was forced to admit that he was the one who sent an anonymous letter to the police saying that Susan’s body was in her home in Beverly Hills.

Last month, Prosecutor John Levin told the jury that there was “a lot of evidence” that Durst had killed all three people whose deaths were linked to his name. According to Levin, Durst’s friend testified, saying that Robert confessed to him about the murder of Berman, explaining it as follows: “I had no choice.” “He has never been prosecuted for domestic violence against (wife) Katie. He was never held accountable for her death. For the past 20 years, he has managed to escape punishment for the murder of Susan,” Levin said, addressing the jury.

“Durst wasn’t cursed at all. He is a murderer of three people who has so far managed to avoid responsibility,” the prosecutor said.
