NATO Secretary-General named the main reason for the Taliban coming to power

The Taliban seized the territories of Afghanistan due to the collapse of the republic’s authorities, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.

In his opinion, first, there was a collapse of the political and military leadership, and then the entire defense of the country against the actions of the Taliban.

At the same time, the Secretary-General avoided answering the question of whether the withdrawal of the NATO contingent from the republic accelerated the destruction of the country’s political structure. Stoltenberg said that researchers should study this issue.

“For me, the main task is to preserve the achievements in the fight against terrorism and get people out of Afghanistan,” the NATO Secretary General said in an interview with The New York Times.

In addition, he called unrealistic the option in which NATO military forces maintained a presence in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US troops from there. Stoltenberg noted that the United States decided to leave after consulting with its allies in the organization.

He also added that the return of the Taliban “broke his heart.”

In August, against the background of the withdrawal of the American military contingent from the Islamic Republic, the Taliban seized all major cities and border crossings. They announced the end of the twenty-year war.

Last Monday, September 6, the Taliban said that the province of Panjshir, the former stronghold of the resistance forces to the militants, became the last of the regions of the country that came under their control.
The resistance forces refute this information.
