The former U.S. president refuses to provide the documents requested from him as part of the investigation into the activities of the Trump Organization, Letitia James said.
The Attorney General of the state of New York, Letitia James, announced her intention to prosecute former U.S. President Donald Trump in the case of alleged financial fraud in the Trump Organization company owned by him. The corresponding statement was published on Thursday on the website of the state Prosecutor’s office.
James complains that Trump, despite the demand of the prosecutor’s office and the court order, refuses to provide the documents requested from him as part of the investigation into the activities of the Trump Organization. Earlier it was reported that the investigation found evidence indicating that Trump’s company provided incorrect information to financial institutions about the value of its assets in order to obtain economic benefits.
“Donald Trump is obliged to comply with the prosecutor’s office’s requirement and present the requested documents,” the New York Attorney General said in a statement. “Instead of following the court order, Trump is trying to avoid it. We demand the immediate intervention of the court, because everyone is equal before the law,” James said. She demands that the New York State Supreme Court impose a fine of $10,000 on Trump for each day of delay.
In July 2021, the Trump Organization and personally its financial director Allen Weisselberg were charged with tax evasion, involvement in fraud, theft of property and forgery of documents. According to CNN, investigators have also been trying for a long time to get testimony from Weisselberg that could be used against Trump. The ex-president has not been charged yet.
