Nuclear tug “Zeus” will search for life in the Universe

The nuclear tug “Zeus” based on a transport and energy module with a megawatt-class power plant will search for life in the Universe, said the head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin.

And missions that are sent to Mars, to Venus, and in the future, after the creation of thermonuclear capabilities, when moving outside the solar system, it will be the most important task to discover and understand: are we alone in space, or is there another life.

Rogozin said this at the International Conference on Space Exploration GLEX-2021. According to a contract previously published on the public procurement website, the development of a preliminary design for the tug will be completed by July 2024 and will cost 4.2 billion rubles.

He added that the development of elements of a nuclear tug based on a transport and energy module with a megawatt-class nuclear power plant has been under way in the country since 2010.

Earlier it became known about plans to launch a nuclear tug into space by 2030 for flight tests. After that, it is planned to start its serial production and commercial use.

It was reported that the nuclear tug will be designed for flights to the Moon and the planets of the solar system. It received the name “Zeus”, and the research and development work itself is called “Nuclon”.
