Moderna’s vaccine was more effective against the COVID-19 delta strain than Pfizer, showing 76% protection versus 42%. The results of the corresponding study are posted on the MedRxiv website.
US scientists tested the effectiveness of Moderna or Pfizer vaccines – in total, about 180 thousand people took part in the study. The study was carried out in several stages from January to July 2021. The study aims to track the effectiveness of the vaccine over time.
Both vaccines are effective against the coronavirus, scientists said. According to the study, Moderna’s efficiency was 86%, and Pfizer’s efficiency was 76%.
At the same time, the effectiveness of both vaccines declined in July against the background of the spread of the new delta strain.
Scientists also noted that cases of the disease in the group of people who were vaccinated with Moderna were much less common. But, on the other hand, the number of hospitalizations was approximately equal in both groups.
“If we consider all cases together, then Moderna provides a two-fold reduction in the risk of infection after vaccination compared to Pfizer,” the scientists summed up.
