Most residents of the United States, China, France, Thailand, and the Republic of Korea support the cancellation or postponement of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is evidenced by the data published on Sunday from a sociological survey conducted by the Japanese Media Research Institute.
According to the results, the most opponents of the Games in Tokyo this year are among the residents of Thailand. There, 95.6% of respondents support the option of canceling or rescheduling the Olympics. In second place were South Koreans (94.7%), and in third place were Chinese (82.1%). The majority of residents of the United States (74.4%) and France (70.6%) also disagree with the decision to hold the Olympics this summer in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.
The survey was conducted from December to January. It was attended by about 5 thousand people – 1 thousand from each country.
On Saturday, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee agreed with the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee not to allow fans from abroad to attend the Olympics. The funds they spent on tickets will be refunded. The Tokyo Olympics were scheduled to run from July 24 to August 9, 2020. However, due to the pandemic, the competition was postponed for a year and will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
