The focus is on a new round of talks with the Taliban and the upcoming elections in Afghanistan.
US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during an unannounced visit to Kabul on Tuesday. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the ongoing peace talks with the Taliban and the security situation ahead of the presidential elections in Afghanistan scheduled for September.
Pompeo made a stop in Kabul on his way to the Indian capital, where he will have talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other officials.
“Given how much is happening in the world today, it is sometimes easy to forget about America’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan, but the world needs to know that the Trump administration and the American people have not forgotten,” Pompeo said in Kabul.
The visit of the US Foreign Minister took place on the eve of the seventh round of talks between US officials and Taliban leaders, designed to contribute to a political solution to the Afghan conflict. The next round of negotiations will begin on June 29 in Doha.
