According to a Gallup Media poll, Germany and the United States continue to lead in influence in the world.
The Gallup Institute (Gallup Media) conducted a study of the effectiveness of the popularity of the leaders of 4 world powers: how the world treats the USA, China, Russia and Germany. The rating refers to the period before February 24 of this year, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
The survey was conducted among respondents from 116 countries and regions throughout 2021. People over the age of 15 participated in the surveys by phone and in person. The ranking is based on representative samples at the national level.
What did this global sociological survey show? Before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Germany and the United States had the greatest “soft power” around the world, and much more than ever. Both countries were in a stronger position than Russia or China. The U.S. and Germany had good opportunities to rally NATO and the rest of the world before Russia invaded Ukraine.
For five years, Germany remained the most popular country in the world in the leadership ranking. We are talking about the period of the reign of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Among the surveyed residents of 116 countries, the rating of confidence in the German leadership and its actions in 2020 was 52%, in 2021 – 50%.
Among residents of European countries, 60% of respondents approved of the policy of the German leadership. For comparison: 40% of the Europeans surveyed approved of the actions of the U.S. administration, 22% – of Russia, and 18% – of China.
The USA, according to the Gallup Institute, occupies the second place.
The rating of trust in the United States in the world in the first year of the Biden administration was 49%. This is a significant increase compared to the last year of the Trump administration’s rating of 30%. Confidence in the United States has increased especially strongly in Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, and confidence has also increased in all NATO and G7 countries, including Japan.
The Gallup Institute notes that the United States has managed to regain the favor of the residents of European countries, who largely ceased to trust the American leadership during the Trump presidency.
At the same time, in Zambia and Nepal, the rating of the United States in 2020 dropped sharply, and also decreased in 13 countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Lithuania.
After the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, the average level of confidence in the world in the actions of the United States dropped to 45%. In Afghanistan itself, in August-September 2021, 87% of all respondents did not approve of the actions of the United States.
Among residents of neighboring countries, 55% of respondents from Canada and 52% from Mexico trusted the American leadership. The lowest rating of confidence in the United States in Latin America was recorded in Chile.
Russia’s rating in the world, before its invasion of Ukraine, was 33%, approximately the same as in 2020. But, as noted in the report of the Gallup Institute, since most of the countries in the world condemn Russian aggression, Russia’s rating may fall much below the level of 22%, which was recorded in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea.
The actions of the Chinese leadership in the global survey were approved by 30 percent of respondents. This rating has hardly changed for 2 years. Sociologists note that China’s future ratings also depend on its reaction to the war in Ukraine and on whether Beijing will support Moscow.
In relation to China, positive dynamics remain in Africa. The actions of the Chinese leadership are approved by 52% of respondents in African countries, the actions of the United States – 60%.
