Intel server processors switched to 10nm technology recently and with a noticeable delay from the original schedule, but Intel is quite happy with the success of 10nm mobile products. Their cost for the year decreased by 45%, allowing the company to increase operating profit in the consumer segment by $540 million.

The appearance on the pages of the Intel website of the quarterly report in the form of 10-Q made it possible to assess the benefits of improving the structure of the cost of 10 nm products in monetary terms. If we focus on the reporting of Intel’s client division, then the increase in operating profit compared to the second quarter of 2020 amounted to almost $ 1 billion. Of this amount, $ 540 million fell on the effect of reducing the production cost of 10nm processors. Now the company is massively supplying processors of the Tiger Lake family, and it was decided to stop supplying Comet Lake, Ice Lake and Lakefield in the mobile segment by April next year. In other words, Intel mobile processors have evolved enough to have a positive impact on manufacturing costs.

For comparison, server Ice Lake-SPs began to be shipped relatively recently, and therefore cannot yet boast of a positive impact on the operating profit of Intel’s core division. This is also evidenced by the 10-Q form: in the second quarter, an increase in the share of 10nm products caused an increase in operating losses by $165 million. This also adds the negative effect from the start of preparations for the release of 7nm server products in the amount of $ 115 million. apparently, it is about the components of the Ponte Vecchio computing accelerators, which will appear on the market earlier than the 7nm central processors themselves. In the client sector, the impact of 7nm process technology on Intel’s operating profit is not yet taken into account, but this may change in the third quarter, when trial production of crystals with computing cores for Meteor Lake processors starts.
