Scientists from NVIDIA announced the construction of the most powerful supercomputer in the UK. The production process was monitored by a miniature robot.

Late last year, Nvidia announced plans to build the Cambridge-1 supercomputer, a $51.7 million device. The researchers planned that it would become the fastest supercomputer in the UK. However, the scientists needed help designing it: Nvidia faced many potential problems, for example, it was difficult for them to manage the installation of a supercomputer remotely.

After just 20 weeks, the company announced the first stage of the device’s work – journalists note that it is very fast to work on a supercomputer. In comparison, most companies took several years from concept planning to final assembly of the device.

The supercomputer, located in one of the company’s buildings in Cambridge, is now undergoing final tests before scientists can begin projects using this device. Basically, they will concern health care.

Researchers monitored the production of a supercomputer using a mobile robot. According to the company’s vice president of architecture and design solutions Mark Hamilton, it looks like “a little thing on two wheels, while very similar to a tablet.”

Previously, the robot was used to build another Nvidia supercomputer – Selene. However, at that time, scientists were present during the design in person, and the device was located at the headquarters of Nvidia in California. An Nvidia employee was always on-site to open the right door for the device.
