The Russian Su-75 Checkmate fighter was presented at the Dubai Airshow 2021 in the UAE. It is a prototype light tactical aircraft (LTS) that is touted as a competitor to the American F-35.
The well-known fifth-generation Russian fighter jet, dubbed Checkmate, debuted outside Russia at the Dubai Air Show. According to Aviation Week, reports emerged this week that prototypes of the aircraft are already under construction.
Initially, Checkmate was presented at the MAKS-2021 air show by the United Aircraft Corporation (part of the Rostec state corporation). It has the following flight characteristics: flight range without outboard tanks – about 3,000 km, combat radius – 1,500 km, service ceiling – 16.5 km, maximum speed – Mach 1.8-2 (2 205-2 450 km/h ).
The aircraft is advertised as a competitor to the F-35. It possesses the capabilities of a fifth generation fighter, but with only one jet engine.
According to Aviation Week, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the clients of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in which the UAE agreed to jointly develop the fifth generation aircraft, was signed back in 2017. Now that Checkmate prototypes are being built in Russia, the UAE may be the first country to acquire them.
Earlier, the media reported that one plane could cost about $ 30 million, but will be available from 2026. UAC has clearly accelerated the production process amid reports that Russian forces may also be among the buyers. According to The Drive, the Russian Defense Ministry discussed the purchase of these aircraft, but not in the current versions. The Russian military is interested in an unmanned version of the Checkmate aircraft.
