Scientists from Australia unveiled the first racing flying car. The device has passed the first tests.

Airspeeder said the company’s electric flying race car made its first unmanned test flights in southern Australia. The aircraft, an electric vertical take-off multicopter (abbreviated as eVTOL), was remotely controlled and test flights were overseen by the country’s Civil Aviation Security Administration.

The ultimate goal of Airspeeder companies is to create flying vehicles for racing. According to the Airspeeder website, “The success of these flights means that the Unmanned EV Grand Prix will take place in 2021 at three soon announced international locations.”

The device weighs 130 kilograms, can accelerate from zero to 100 km / h in 2.8 seconds and climb to an altitude of 500 m. It is equipped with a removable battery that can be replaced in less than 20 seconds. It can fly for 10 to 15 minutes on a single battery, and it is equipped with lidar and radar to create a “virtual force field” to help prevent collisions, the company says.

Airspeeder says the first races in the EXA series, which the company plans to host later this year, will feature up to four teams, with two remote drivers per team.
