Sweden has officially decided to apply for membership in NATO, follows from the statement of the ruling Social Democratic Party.
“At its meeting today, May 15, 2022, the board of the Party of Social Democrats decided that the party will work to ensure that Sweden applies for membership in NATO,” the official statement says.
At the same time, the country’s leadership intends to seek a ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons and permanent military bases on its territory.
On Sunday, Finland also officially decided to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
In Stockholm and Helsinki, they talked about the possibility of abandoning long-term neutrality and joining NATO against the background of the Russian special operation in Ukraine. The head of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, claims that the alliance will be glad to see Finland and Sweden in its ranks and will provide them with the opportunity to join quickly.
