The airspace over Geneva may be closed to civilian aircraft during the Russian-American summit on June 16, the official representative of the Swiss Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sports, Lorenz Frischknecht.
“Preparations for monitoring the airspace are underway. We are currently unable to provide further details. Possible measures include surveillance of the airspace, the deployment of combat aircraft and ground-based air defense systems, as well as restrictions on the use of airspace for civil aviation,” the representative of the ministry said.
The meeting of Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden will take place on June 16 in Geneva. They are expected to discuss strategic stability, the fight against the pandemic, international issues, and regional conflicts.
According to Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian leader, Moscow considers it important that the summit takes place, preparations for it continue. In turn, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that Biden is going to raise questions about the situation in Ukraine and Belarus.
