The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that Beijing demanded that Washington “correct mistakes.”
During the talks with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, the Chinese delegation demanded that the American side stop pursuing a policy that infringes on the interests of the People’s Republic of China. This was announced on Monday by the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian.
“The visit of US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman to China has not yet ended. < … > During the consultations, China focused on the problems of a bilateral nature, outlining its position on the development of Sino-American relations,” he said at a briefing. “We have unequivocally opposed the interference of the United States in the domestic policy of our country, as it undermines the national interests of the People’s Republic of China.”
According to the official representative of the Foreign Ministry, the Chinese side demanded that Washington “correct the mistakes.” He noted that China and the United States also discussed many topics in which they have a mutual interest, including the peace settlement process on the Korean peninsula, the Iran nuclear issue, and the fight against climate change.
“The American side is committed to cooperation with China on these issues and has expressed interest in our support,” Zhao Lijian stressed. As he clarified, Beijing intends to solve these problems by “constructive methods”.
“The United States should not look down on the Chinese people, because the number of inhabitants of our country exceeds 1.4 billion people. We intend to firmly defend sovereignty, security, and the interests of national development,” the Chinese diplomat summed up.
US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman is on a visit to China on July 25-26, during which meetings are planned with Chinese officials, including a member of the State Council, Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
